With its smoked lights and body kit, the Sport getup is actually a pretty handsome appearance package.

A deeper front fascia gives the already snub-nosed Edge an even more blunt front end.

The Sport package brings with it no additional power or handling capability. But it looks like it should be faster.

Because you always wanted a Ford Edge with polka-dot seats, right? The Sport's interior changes are restricted to trim.

Standard fitment for the Sport are dark gray leather seats with contrasting stitching.

When asked, "Damn, are those 22s?" you may answer in the affirmative.

"Sport" might be overselling it a bit, but we like the red-tipped badge anyway.

What is it?
2009 Ford Edge Sport

What's special about it?
Don't get too excited. The 2009 Ford Edge Sport is not the return of the GMC Typhoon, or a Porsche Cayenne for those with average credit scores.

In this case, "Sport" refers not to sports car handling or pretensions. Instead, this "Sport" is sporty in the same way that a Mercury Grand Marquis is "Grand" or a Buick Century Limited was "Limited."

The Sport is more properly defined as a sport-appearance package. This can mean only one thing in the modern, post-SUV world: huge wheels. And boy, does the Ford Edge Sport have a set. Optionally available for the Sport is a set of glinting, polished 22-inch wheels covered in 40-series Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires. For those of a more conservative bent, the standard Sport wheels are painted 20-inchers. The Sport also gets smoked headlight and taillight lenses. An eight-piece body kit includes a unique front airdam, rocker sill skirts, lower door caps and a rear skirt.

Sporting up the interior are dark-gray leather seats with suedelike inserts and light gray stitching. The same contrasting stitches are used on the leather-upholstered steering wheel and shift knob. The center console has an etched metal-style trim. The 2009 Ford Edge Sport goes on sale in the fall, and it will be offered in blue, silver, black or red.

What's Edmunds' take?
We're a little afraid of what the 22s might do to ride quality, but the kids...they're crazy for the big wheels. — Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit
